On Monday, March 1st, I had the pleasure to accompany Ms. Kelly and represent Pembroke Kids and the DDC at the Cleveland Museum of Art‘s mini-conference Picture This: Storytelling and the Arts. The mini-conference was developed for early childhood educators to learn how to help students grow up great through the art of telling stories in pictures, song, rhythm and acting. Celebrated children’s picture book author and illustrator Denise Fleming presented a key note session, followed by educator-led sessions in the art galleries on bringing everyday stories to life. Denise Fleming’s books have received many awards for her colorful pulp paintings and lively prose, including the Caldecott Honor for In the Small, Small Pond.
We gained many valuable insights from Denise and the staff at The Cleveland Museum of Art and can’t wait to put them into action at the DDC! One activity that will be implemented in the near future will be papermaking. If you are looking for some creative ways to spend an evening with your child, Denise has some great how-to instructions on her website in the Activities Index. The CMA also has some cool online activities too!
Picture This: Storytelling and the Arts is an early education investment program from PNC Financial Services, in partnership with The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Cleveland Orchestra, PlayHouse Square, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.
