MICHELANGELO DI LODOVICO BUONARROTI SIMONI (b. March 6, 1475, Caprese, Republic of Florence [Italy]–d. Feb. 18, 1564, Rome), Italian Renaissance sculptor, painter, architect, and poet who exerted an unparalleled influence on the development of Western art. Michelangelo took the commission to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (1508–1512).
This was how I introduced the great Renaissance artist to Ms. Krista’s Kindergarten class this week. The kids were amazed to hear that it took Michelangelo more than 4 years (almost as old as they are) to paint the ceiling of the “16th Apple”. It took a few minutes of practice but the kids eventually knew that Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel. I asked them if they would like to try to paint upside down, and they all exclaimed “YES!” We had a surprise under their tables, a fresh piece of white paper to draw on. After about 5 minutes the students realized how much different it is to draw upside down, and what a pain in the neck it is!
